Women and Hair Loss

Did you know that almost half of the female population suffers from hair loss by the time they are in their 50's?  Sad to say but it is true. Women are more and more likely to be following the trend of our male counterparts when it comes to hair loss.

Women have a tendency to lose hair on the top of their heads unlike men who tend to get a recession in the front hairline.  When hair loss begins, the first step that we always recommend is to see your general physician. This will rule out any medical issues such as thyroid conditions that might be attributing to your hair loss. If your doctor determines that your hair loss is genetic, there are a few steps you should take. If you catch your hair loss in its early stages there are several topical treatments that will help to build strength in your hair follicle and will slow down the hair loss.  We love the Hair Support line. There is a kit that comes with a shampoo, conditioner and overnight treatment.  We have seen huge results with this line and it is our best seller. Keeping your hair clean while experiencing hair loss should be a top priority and the hair support shampoo gets down to the hair follicle to allow your hair to grow and produce a fuller head of hair.  If your hair loss has gotten to the point of no return, then there are many wonderful non surgical options that are available.  At Donte's of New York we offer hairsystems to our female clients who have experienced a great deal of hair loss. These hairsystems are all human hair and look so natural that when someone is looking onto your head all they see is scalp and a beautiful head of hair.  We also offer hair extensions. Many of our customers just have fine and sometimes thinning hair. Hair extensions can provide a beautiful head of hair when attached in a non-damaging way as we do at Donte's of New York. Finally, we also offer the Micropoint line of hair. Micropoint Links allow you to add 4 hairs to 1 of your existing hairs, giving you a fuller head of hair that looks so natural no one would know.  Micropoint Accents are small extensions that can be placed on the top of the head and can give you a ton of volume where you need it the most.

Choosing the right color and style for you

With all the beautiful hair colors and styles that are out there, picking the perfect one for you can be a challenge. Here are some tips that may help:

  1. Bring in a picture of yourself-If there was a phase in your life that you particularly loved your hair color or hairstule, then why not try to recreate it?  Pictures can be very helpful for your stylist as you both are seeing the same thing and can help insure that you get what you asked for.
  2. Use your own vocabulary to explain what you want, not the salon's-Letting your stylist know that you like your hair to be blonde with a touch of dark in it, helps so much more than trying to use salon speak.  It is amazing how many people think an ashy tone looks warm and a warm tone looks ashy. Also if you are not clear on what your stylist is describing always ask if they can show you a color swatch of what they mean. All salons should have a color swatch so you can clearly see what you are going to get.
  3. Ask away -It is your hair that is going to be cut, colored, permed, etc...always make sure you know exactly what you are getting done.  As some of you may know, a hair surprise is one of the worst surprises there is.  Ask questions like:  "What kind of maintenance will my new look have?" or "Can I still pull my hair back in a ponytail, with my new look?" to name a few. Your stylist wants you to be happy so making sure you are is a priority, don't be afraid to ask anything and everything that you are thinking at the time of your appointment.
Hopefully these tips will help you to enjoy your next salon experience even more.

Retaining and Maintaining your hair

For most of us, our hair is a big part of our appearance.  If you ever had to go through the horrible process of losing your hair wheather it is temporary or permanent the effects can be devestating.  Below are some steps to keep the hair you have in tip top shape.

  1. Use products that are good for your hair-Sulfate Free shampoos are the latest and greatest products out there. They are ideal for dry, colored and damaged hair but work great with all hair types.  We love the Sudzz FX line of sulfate free shampoos such as Cashmere, Nyrvana and Whipped Cream and Honey.
  2. Use a Silicone Based Smoother before using any hot tools-Hot tools can wreck damage to your hair, these include curling irons, flat irons and even hair dryers when used on their highest settings.  Using a silicone based smoother such as Zenyth by Sudzz FX, your hair will not only feel wonderful but will look beautiful too.
  3. Use an Ionic Blow Dryer-An Ionic Blow Dryer will reduce frizz and not cause further damage to your hair.  It emits a negative charge that will stop the frizz and leave your hair with a beautiful shine
  4. A brush and wet hair should never mix- One of the biggest discussions we have with our customer is not to brush wet hair. We always recommend brushing hair before going into the shower and not using a brush again until the hair is about 85% dry. Why, may you ask? Well, hair is its most elastic when wet. When the hair pulls it can easily snap, causing frizzy, damaged hair.
  5. Washing your hair every day is ok but...-You certainly are ok with washing your hair every day but unless your hair is dirty from something other than normal wear, it is really best to give your hair a break from a daily washing. Try washing your hair every other day or if you can every few days.  Allowing the natural oils from your scalp to come through, will give your hair a chance to be its healthiest.

What is the normal amount of hair loss?

One of the most frequently asked questions that we receive from our clients is, "how much hair loss is normal on a given day?"  The answer to that is, it is normal to lose up to 150 strands a day.  Aging, over coloring your hair and wearing tight ponytails can contribute to even more hair loss.  If you find you are losing more than this amount, the first thing we recommend is to visit your physician to rule out a thyroid condition, Vitamin D or iron deficiencies, hormone as well as many other autoimmune diseases that may contribute to your hair loss.  If the Doctor cannot diagnose anything, your hair loss could possibly be caused from a high degree of stress or it may just be your genetic make up.

No matter what stage of hair loss you are in, we know it can be devestating. At Donte's of New York, we offer a wide range of non-surgical services that can help you get back a head of hair you will love.

Non Damaging Hair Extensions

Hair Extensions are available in a wide variety of lengths and can range from straight to tight curls, but when it comes to the application you want to be sure to choose the right type of extensions that will offer no damage to your hair.

At Donte's of New York after years of education and through trial and error we choose to use only the best quality hair extensions along with the techniques that will leave your own hair intact.  The hair extensions should not be applied with any type of adhesive. This includes any extensions that are pretipped, heated and rolled into the hair (Keratin bonds for example). Adhesives can be harsh on the hair and cause the hair to weaken and break. We also do not believe that braiding or sewing will leave your hair in it's best shape. In fact braiding and sewing have been known to cause a condition called Tract Alopecia. This can cause lasting hair loss, so we are highly against this type of procedure.

The procedures that we use for hair extensions allow the customer to leave with a gorgeous head of hair which if they so choose can be worn for many years.
