Postpartum hair loss

When a woman is pregnant her body produces a lot more estrogen than normal.  The rise in estrogen levels can cause a woman's hair to grow rapidly. About 3-4 months after the woman gives birth, the estrogen hormone decreases tremendously and will cause the hair follicles to go into what is known as the Telogen phase.  When the hair follicles are in the Telogen phase, they then will go into shedding. This shedding can last anywhere from 4-7 months. The hair loss may appear to be happening all over the scalp but a lot of women will notice that their hair line is receding back further than what it was prior to or during their pregnancy.

What can you do, if you are a new mom and this has happened to you?  If you are breast feeding, make sure to consult with your doctor prior to taking any supplements to make sure that they are safe for the baby.  Some natural things such as eating a healthy diet, will definitely help your hair growth.  If you are looking for a temporary solution, then hair extensions or Micropoint Links may be an option. Hair extensions can provide a fullness to not only the bottom portion of your hair but also at the top when applied properly.  Micropoint links add fullness to your hair by attaching 4 strands of hair to one of yours. The best part, they are none damaging and grow out with your own hair.

Steps for making your hair addition look natural

When deciding on purchasing a hair addition, one of the main things that most people worry about, is that it will not look natural.  There are some important things to keep in mind, color of course is one of the first things because if the color does not match, a natural look will be hard to get. Secondly,  length is important because you want to make sure the hair lays where you like it. Finally density should be high on your list because if the hair is too thick or too thin, then once again you will loose the natural look you are after. It is hard to determine the density once you have experienced a great deal of thinning or hair loss. If you are like most people the loss of hair makes you want a ton more of it. Of course having a lot of hair is not something that most people had to begin with and if you want to get back to looking as you did before your hair loss began then you want to be sure to get a density that first of all you can be happy with, one that you can handle and most important looks natural on you.  As time progresses and you become more comfortable with your hair addition you may decide to add length or even more density but it is recommended to start out conservatively until the whole process of wearing hair becomes comfortable to you.  There are of course those of us who don't mind if others know they have a hair addition, if that is you, then by all means select what you want, but keep in mind, that a lot of hair does mean a lot more work.

Hair Loss...what is normal?

One of the most frequently asked questions that we receive from our clients is, "how much hair loss is normal on a given day?"  The answer to that is, it is normal to lose up to 150 strands a day.  Aging, over coloring your hair and wearing tight ponytails can contribute to even more hair loss.  If you find you are losing more than this amount, the first thing we recommend is to visit your physician to rule out a thyroid condition, Vitamin D or iron deficiencies, hormone as well as many other autoimmune diseases that may contribute to your hair loss.  If the Doctor cannot diagnose anything, your hair loss could possibly be caused from a high degree of stress or it may just be your genetic make up.

No matter what stage of hair loss you are in, we know it can be devestating. At Donte's of New York, we offer a wide range of non-surgical services that can help you get back a head of hair you will love.

Preventing frizzy hair

Who likes frizzy hair?  Most people would say smooth hair looks so much better.  Unruly hair effects all of us at one time or another, but what can we do to prevent it or get rid of it?  Below are the steps to follow to get rid of frizz:

  • Always use a frizz fighter that is made for your hair type:  for fine or medium hair serums work well while creams  or oils are ideal for thick hair. We highly recommend for all hair types Sudzz Fx, Zenyth. This products works great as a serum or oil providing, shiny, beautiful results.   If your  hair is curly a leave in conditioner such as, 444 spray works wonders.
  • Use your anti-frizz product on damp hair:  It is best to use a small dime sized amount of your frizz fighter and be sure to distribute it evenly throughout your hair. Believe it or not, overuse of a serum could actually produce knots in your hair, so stick to the dime sized amount for best results.
  • Air-drying is great:  We always recommend that our clients brush their hair out really good prior to washing your hair. This prevents breakage, as when the hair is wet it is most elastic and has a tendency to snap and break.  If you have some tangling when you do come out of the shower only use your fingers or a wide tooth comb to remove the tangles.  The less you touch your hair when it is drying the less frizz you will see.
  • Blow drying is fine too:  If you want to blow dry your hair, it is best to apply a serum, cream or oil and let the drying begin.  Using the nozzle attachment on your blower is always great as it prevents the high heat of the hair dryer to hit the hair as much. If you have wavy or curly  hair, using a diffuser is also great.
  • Hair should be dry throughout:  Wet or damp hair has a tendency to frizz when touched so make sure your hair is completely dry before going out.
Follwing these tips should help you maintain a beautiful, frizz free head of hair that everyone will admire.

Preventing heat damage to your hair

The use of hot tools over time on hair can cause major damage.  Using a hair dryer, curling iron or flat iron on a daily basis, can cause your hair's cuticle to really dry out and frizz.  Over time, the dryness will cause your hair to break.  Below are the steps that we at Donte's of New York recommend to our clients.

  • After washing your hair, it is important that you pat dry your hair, do not rub. Rubbing will cause friction and breakage.
  • After exiting the shower, it is important to apply a frizz eliminator such as Zenyth by Sudzz FX. This silicone based product will coat your hair to protect it from the heat, while at the same time leave behind a beautiful healthy shine to your hair. This is one of our best sellers at Donte's of New York, both Men and Women love it.
  • When using your hair dryer, try to dry your hair with the nozzle attachment. This will create a good distance between your hair and the dryer, minimizing too much heat from hitting your hair at once.
  • If you choose to flat iron your hair, only go over each section one time and try to use a setting that is 360 degrees or less for fine hair and 410 degrees or less for thicker hair.
Following these steps will allow you to have a beautiful head of hair. If however, you find that your hair loss is beyond repair, Donte's of New York has solutions to help you get back the hair you once had with our natural hairpieces and hair extensions, only your stylist and you will know the difference.  Call today for a free consultation: 480-483-8800 or visit our website:  www.dontes.com to learn more.
