Hair Extensions, which one is the best?

Hair Extensions come in a multitude of ways they can be attached.  The first thing you may want to think about is whether you want to always wear your extensions or if you want to take them in and out at your own discretion.

Remy or Virgin hair extensions, how does one know?

Visually one cannot tell the difference between Remy Human Hair and Virgin Human Hair extensions but when looking for one or the other, here are some things to know.

What causes hair loss?

Did you know that each one of your hair follicles is a living organ? It's true! Keeping that in mind, it is important that we do all we can to keep each of them strong so that we can keep the hair we have for as long as possible.

Temporary Hair Loss

Getting rid of the frizz

Frizzy hair effects all of us. Straight hair, curly hair or somewhere in between.  Here are some tips for getting rid of the frizz:

 

If you have wavy hair: 

Use a good leave in conditioner, such as 444 spray by IHI. This will bring the moisture back into your hair and give you shine. 

 

Blot, do not rub your hair when it is wet. Rubbing wet hair causes friction, breakage and frizz. Gently blotting your wet hair to get out the moisture is always a good thing to prevent the frizz.

 

If you use any hot tools, make sure to use a good serum before applying the heat. We love the Zenyth serum by Sudzz FX. It smells great and a little goes a long way to provide shine and no more frizzies. 

 

If you have straight hair:

 

Use a hydrating shampoo and conditioner to keep your hair shiny and frizz free. We love the combo of the Sudzz FX Cashmere shampoo and the Aquafix conditioner.

Synthetic Hair Vs. Human Hair

When deciding what type of hair you would like to have in a wig or a hairsystem there are basically 2 commonly available choices-Human Hair or Synthetic Hair. How does one determine which would be better for them?  Below are the pluses and minuses to both.

Human Hair

1. It's human hair, which means it is going to look just as your own hair did.
2. You can do everything you did with your own hair with a human hairpiece or wig-curling, coloring, etc...
3. It looks natural. Sometimes dependent upon the quality of the synthetic hair, you can see a marked difference from the sheen of the hair. A lot of synthetic hair tends to have a shiny look. 
4. It breaks. The hair on a wig or hairsystem is processed so taking great care of it and keeping it moisturized is key. Not properly conditioning the hair or keeping it hydrated can cause the hair to become dry and brittle which can lead to breakage. 

Synthetic Hair

1.  Easy to wash and wear-synthetic hair keeps it's shape so you really do not have to spend a great deal of time styling it.
2. Less expensive to purchase in a lot of cases. Because it is manufactured hair and not human hair the costs are a lot lower. 
3.  Shine. Synthetic hair, particularly lower grade wigs or hair pieces tend to have a high shine to them. This makes the hair not look as natural as it should.
4.  Frizzing. If too much friction is applied to synthetic hair, it can frizz up and there is not a lot that can be done to recover it. 
5.  You will not be able to use high heat on a synthetic wig or hairsystem. In most cases it will melt the hair and ruin it completely. So no curls.

Keeping your hair young

As we age, so does our hair but following the steps listed below can help keep your hair looking fresh and young.

1.  Keep ponytails loose & at a minimum:
Keeping hair in tight ponytails, braids or anything that puts stress on your hair, can lead to breakage.  Worn too many days in a row it can also lead to hair loss that sometimes can be permanent. The best advice that we give our clients is to reduce the stress on your hair by alternating wearing your hair down and up.  Try not to wear your hair in a tight pulled back style too many days in a row and keep braiding to a minimum.  Wearing hair extensions that are attached with braids or are sewn in have been known to cause Track Alopecia, lose of hair in the specific area where extensions are attached in this manner.  At Donte's of New York, our hair extensions are attached in a non-damaging way that will not contribute to hair loss and will actually allow damaged hair to grow out, leaving only healthy hair. 

2.  Shampoo less:
Unless your hair is oily or dirty, it is not always necessary to shampoo daily.  Shampoo's actually can strip the hair, which can cause dull hair that breaks.  If you feel you must shampoo daily, then try to shampoo only at the root and condition the ends.  Choosing a shampoo that is moisturizing is always a good way to go as it will help keep hair shiny and healthy.  We recommend Suddz FX Cashmere Shampoo as it works wonders at moisturizing hair and keeping it looking it's best.

3.  Take care with your hair when it is wet:
When hair is wet it has a tendency to be elastic and can snap easily. Rubbing your hair with a towel is a no, no as is brushing it.  We always advise our customers to brush their hair out thoroughly before washing their hair and use only their fingers to get out any knots once they come out of the shower.  Once your hair is about 85% dry then you can start using a brush to style your hair. 

4. Use hot tools sparingly:
Using hot tools such as curling irons, hair dryers or flat irons on a daily basis can cause hair to dry out. This will lead to dull, frizzy and damaged hair that easily breaks.  When using hot tools, it is important that you always use a protective serum or spray, this will coat the hair with silicone and will help to keep hair from being damaged.  Our favorite product is the Suddzz FX Zenyth serum.  All you need to use is about a dime sized amount and it keeps hair looking shiny and beautiful even when you are using hot tools.  Using hot tools less often is also recommended. Try air drying your hair or flat ironing every few days, and you should see a nice difference.

Taking care of your hair during the summer

The summer sun may feel nice but spending too much time outside may cause damage to your hair.  The following are some steps you can take so that you can enjoy the wonderful summer weather.

1.  Use a leave in conditioner that contains sunscreen. In the hot Arizona summer which lasts much longer than other parts of the country, we always recommend our clients use either IHI's 444 spray or the Qshi Leave in Conditioner. Choosing the right color and style for you

With all the beautiful hair colors and styles that are out there, picking the perfect one for you can be a challenge. Here are some tips that may help:

What is the normal amount of hair loss?

Non Damaging Hair Extensions

Hair Extensions are available in a wide variety of lengths and can range from straight to tight curls, but when it comes to the application you want to be sure to choose the right type of extensions that will offer no damage to your hair.

Matching your existing hair to your hair system or to hair extensions

When deciding on purchasing a hair addition, there are some important things to keep in mind, color of course is one of the first things because if the color does not match, a natural look will be hard to get. Secondly,  length is important because you want to make sure the hair lays where you like it. Finally density should be high on your list because if the hair is too thick or too thin, then once again you will loose the natural look you are after.  It is hard to determine the density once you have experienced a great deal of thinning or hair loss. If you are like most people the loss of hair makes you want a ton more of it. Aging hair, fact or fiction?

As we age, so does our hair.  It may turn gray, while at the same time the texture may become brittle and may have a tendency to break more easily.  Hair in a lot of cases will also thin out and hair loss becomes more apparent as the aging process continues in life.  For most people, our hair begins to change as early as when we are in our mid 30's.  Using chemical treatments, over processing hair with color and the use of hot tools does not help aging hair.  What can you do to keep your hair healthy as you inevitably age?  Below are some steps we recommend you take to keep your hair looking beautiful even as the years go by.

1. Eat healthy-a diet that is rich in protein, omega oils and calcium will allow your hair to be strong and shine. If you are not a fan of foods that contain protein, omega oils and calcium, then be sure to supplement your diet with vitamins.  You will also want to consider taking vitamins that contain biotin, vitamins E, C & A as well as Zinc.

Testosterone and Male Pattern Hair Loss

Getting rid of frizzy hair

Who likes frizzy hair?  Most people would say smooth hair looks so much better.  Unruly hair effects all of us at one time or another, but what can we do to prevent it or get rid of it?  Below are the steps to follow to get rid of frizz:

• Always use a frizz fighter that is made for your hair type:  for fine or medium hair serums work well while creams  or oils are ideal for thick hair. We highly recommend for all hair types Sudzz Fx, Zenyth. This products works great as a serum or oil providing, shiny, beautiful results.   If your  hair is curly a leave in conditioner such as, 444 spray works wonders. 
• Use your anti-frizz product on damp hair:  It is best to use a small dime sized amount of your frizz fighter and be sure to distribute it evenly throughout your hair. Believe it or not, overuse of a serum could actually produce knots in your hair, so stick to the dime sized amount for best results. 
• Air-drying is great:  We always recommend that our clients brush their hair out really good prior to washing your hair. This prevents breakage, as when the hair is wet it is most elastic and has a tendency to snap and break.  If you have some tangling when you do come out of the shower only use your fingers or a wide tooth comb to remove the tangles.  The less you touch your hair when it is drying the less frizz you will see.
• Blow drying is fine too:  If you want to blow dry your hair, it is best to apply a serum, cream or oil and let the drying begin.  Using the nozzle attachment on your blower is always great as it prevents the high heat of the hair dryer to hit the hair as much. If you have wavy or curly  hair, using a diffuser is also great. 
• Hair should be dry throughout:  Wet or damp hair has a tendency to frizz when touched so make sure your hair is completely dry before going out.

Heat Damage to Hair

The use of hot tools over time on hair can cause major damage.  Using a hair dryer, curling iron or flat iron on a daily basis, can cause your hair's cuticle to really dry out and frizz.  Over time, the dryness will cause your hair to break.  Below are the steps that we at Donte's of New York recommend to our clients.

• After washing your hair, it is important that you pat dry your hair, do not rub. Rubbing will cause friction and breakage.

What is the best care for fine or oily hair?

Fine or oily hair requires maintainance.  Most people believe if you have fine or oily hair it must be washed daily. This is not always the case, as washing hair every day, will strip away the hairs natural oils and can produce frizz.

Alcohols the forbidden ingredient when you wear a hairsystem

As a hairsystem wearer,  it is very important you use products which provide your hair only with ingredients that will give moisture to your hairsystem. 

One of the biggest ingredients that will dry out your hair are certain alcohols. The following are the alcohols we recommend you avoid:  Deantured or "Denat" alcohol, Propyl Alcohol, Isopropyl Alcohol or SD Alcohol.  Although using alcohols in your hair is not recommended using them on the base is something that would be hard to avoid. Most solvents contain alcohol and solvents as you know are unavoidable when trying to remove bond or tape.  Just be sure to wash your hair with a good shampoo that does not contain alcohol after using them.  We recommend using the Qshi line of hair products or the IHI Hair Support line. Condition frequently and wash less

Did you know that washing your hair every day, can strip your hair of it's natural oils? 

The natural oils that your scalp produces, actually is a built in conditioner that helps to fight split ends. Less split ends means less haircutting as well as healthier looking hair.
